Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations throughout Japan and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," commented the business owner, a regular figure at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This latest purchase exceeds his previous historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to surpass his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which stated the fish would be featured at its locations across Japan.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," said one satisfied patron.
