Chelsea's Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The 44-year-old made a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game press conference despite earning a 2-0 win at home thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to four outings.

Yet, when asked about the full-back's assist and general display, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his frustration over the previous 48-hour period within the organization.

"The way the lads are eager to improve has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with so many challenges, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he said.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the worst because several people didn't support us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. In general," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."

Fitness and Disciplinary Woes

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are performing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.

Speculation Over Maresca's Remark

It was not immediately clear what exactly prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the Italian had returned with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-match press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue related to the club's supporters, a section of which have not yet fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July last year.
