At least 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. Over 80 people were detained.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Residents have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, together with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by various security forces comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the South American nation prior to significant global gatherings in the country.
