The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.

Playoff Climax

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
